1) Closures will unfairly target the inner city areas of Aurora - areas already suffering from more

Itinerant and disadvantaged citizens in addition to many older citizens, some of whom, because they have limited or fixed income or don’t have easy internet access, rely more heavily on the services of the Postal Service.

2) Hurt commercial areas with already high vacancies. The retail landscape is already rife with empty storefronts. Closing the Post Offices will add to this glut, while taking away an anchor tenant - one that can draw customers for other businesses in shopping areas.

3) Hurt home based businesses that rely on convenient locations for mailing. Today, many households are able to make ends meet only through online selling. Closures of the neighborhood Post Office will force these small home-based businesses to travel farther to use the Postal Service, use higher cost private mailing services or possibly close these businesses.  In addition, many home based businesses rely on Post Office Boxes as their primary business address, allowing an evening  of the advantage their larger, better established competitors hold.

4) Hurt those who rely on reasonably priced PO Boxes as their home mailing address. There are many apartment homes in Aurora, and many residents who, for any number of reasons, move to more or less expensive locations due to shifting economic conditions. Many of these customers rely on Post Office Box service for a permanent address, one not subject to change even as their personal circumstances often do change.

5) Claims that alternative sources are available are not supported by the evidence. While stamps are usually available in grocery stores, there are few major grocery stores in the older part of Aurora; Safeway closed their Colfax store within the past year, and King Soopers closed their Colfax at Havana store within the past 5 years. Albertsons closed their only north Aurora store decades ago. Convenience stores typically mark-up the cost of a book of stamps by a high percentage. There are no companies authorized to offer Private Mail Box services in area. There are no private shipping companies - UPS Stores, FedEx/Kinkos, etc - in the area. The Contract Postal Unit at Fitzsimons is hidden in a bookstore in a building somewhere on campus.

Already, the Post Office at the University of Colorado Denver Campus in Aurora has been slated to close.

Since final decisions have yet to be made on the other stations in Aurora, it is imperative that interested members of the community become involved in the process, to help guide Postal management to the best decision for the entire city. The most vulnerable stations are those in north Aurora, the oldest part of the city, although all stations will be evaluated.

At a time when the economy of Aurora is suffering as it rarely has in the past 50 years, and a comeback seems to be just around the corner, we need all the resources we can muster to help.

Write or call today explaining why you want the Postal Service to keep these important local resources open.

The United States Postal Service ( USPS ) has announced a nationwide study to determine which local Post Offices will remain open and which will permanently close.  The announced communities include Aurora, Colorado.
